Unexpected power outage at hospital

Terrace residents are being asked to avoid Mills Memorial Hospital, except in the case of an emergency, while repair work is done following an unexpected power outage at the facility earlier today.

That means avoiding visiting patients or coming to the hospital for non-urgent needs – but the emergency room will remain open.

“The Mills Memorial emergency department will remain open, and anyone needing emergency care should continue to come to the hospital or call 9-1-1 as they normally would. If necessary, patients will be stabilized and transferred according to their care needs,” according to a release posted on Northern Health's website.

The repairs will take place between 6 p.m. tonight and 6 a.m. tomorrow morning.

“The hospital has been on backup generator power since this morning’s failure of the facility’s essential power switch. Electricians specializing in repairs to this type of switch are travelling to Terrace, and are expected to begin work this evening,” said the release.

Northern Health anticipates the work to take approximately six hours. The hospital will switch from its regular generator, to portable generator power during that time.

“Due to the timing, the repairs are expected to have the least possible impact on patient services, however patients, staff and visitors may notice reduced lighting levels inside and outside of the hospital (including parking lot lighting), and elevators will be out of service during the repair period.”

Northern Health expects operations to return to normal tomorrow.

Patients who aren’t sure whether their condition would warrant an emergency room visit, or who need health advice can call HealthLink BC (8-1-1), or visit for non-emergency health information from nurses, dieticians, and pharmacists 24 hours a day, seven days per week.
