City workers in Williams Lake serve 72-hour strike notice
Unionized employees at the City of Williams Lake served 72-hour strike notice Wednesday afternoon.
International Union of Operating Engineers Local Union 882B service representative John Dube said notice was served at 1:53 p.m. which means the union will be on strike by Saturday afternoon at l:53 p.m.
Talks between the city and the union began on Feb. 12 but have broken down, he told the Tribune.
"We're not even close. We thought yesterday that there were a few things that we'd put on the table that were beneficial to the employer and some concerns they had and ways to work around it. We thought things were going quite well with the hope that they would come back today to address some of our concerns."
Dube said the employer was still adamant about rollbacks on the union's part.
"It's unfortunate. We hope this won't last too long, but the city is going to have to pull up its socks and get serious with the bargaining."
We will continue to update this story as we get more details.
