Coldstream reaches carbon neutral goal
The District of Coldstream has reached an environmental milestone.
Officials say the municipality was operationally carbon neutral in 2012 as part of a provincewide Climate Action Charter it signed.
“I am glad that we have reached this point and will continue to seek new initiatives for the betterment of our community,” said Mayor Jim Garlick.
Beyond offsetting carbon emissions the district was unable to reduce, it pursued a number of initiatives in 2012.
They included development of civic building, fuel efficient and green infrastructure action plans.
A solar-ready initiative was adopted while solar panels were installed on the old fire hall and a hybrid vehicle was purchased.
Council adopted a tax revitalization program to support sustainability.
“Maintaining carbon neutral status is an important step in ensuring that individuals, corporations and governments at every level do their part in reducing the impacts of climate change,” said Michael Stamhuis, chief administrative officer.
