Man suspected of impaired driving rolls his vehicle

A man suspected of impaired driving went off the road the hard way Sunday afternoon.

Shawnigan Lake RCMP received a report of an impaired driver around 4:20 p.m. While police were en route, the suspect vehicle veered off the pavement to the right on Fisher Road and rolled onto the driver's side.

The van had driven over the telephone support line just prior to that, narrowly missing a pole.

Ambulance attendants and, later, Cowichan District Hospital staff had to contend with physical assaults by the man police believe was driving the car. He was held overnight in hospital for observation.

RCMP are awaiting toxicology reports but will be recommending charges of impaired driving against a 22-year-old man from Chemainus.

"Shawnigan Lake RCMP wish to thank the continued support of citizens calling in suspected impaired drivers,'' noted Sgt. Rob Webb.
