The Independent Investigations Office is investigating a shooting involving Burnaby RCMP that has left a man dead.

An officer responding to a 911 call of a man with a knife in the 4100 block of Albert Street early Thursday morning encountered a suspect who matched the description at Hastings and MacDonald. The man was shot and transported by ambulance to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Seven officers from the IIO, a civilian-led body created to investigate police incidents that result in death or serious harm, have been sent to the scene to conduct their investigation.

Hastings Street is closed at MacDonald.
