Apartment assault
New Westminster police don't believe an assault in an Eighth Street apartment Tuesday that sent a man to hospital with non-life threatening injuries was a home invasion.
The department's major crimes unit has taken over investigation of the incident which occurred in a building at 411 Eighth St. just after 11 p.m.
"We're still investigating but I can say we believe it wasn't a random event," said Sgt. Diana McDaniel on Wednesday.
She said investigators are seeking four male suspects who took $400 in cash before the victim was able to get to a neighbour's apartment to call 911.
There were reports the 41-year-old victim was duct taped, assaulted with a hammer and burned with a blowtorch. McDaniel would not reveal how the man was assaulted by did say there was no blowtorch burning involved.
As of Wednesday morning, investigators were waiting until the victim was well enough before interviewing him.
