Take care with your cellphone, Surrey RCMP warns
Police are reminding young people to be extra vigilant with their personal property.
Over the past few weeks, Surrey Mounties have responded to a number of personal robberies that have occurred throughout the city.
Surrey RCMP, along with the Surrey Board of Education, are concerned as some of the victims include local high school students who have been robbed of their mobile phones and personal effects on their way to and from school.
“Simple steps, like trusting your instincts and being aware of your surroundings, will help reduce the risk of being a potential victim,” said Surrey RCMP Cpl. Bert Paquet
“Police and the school district recommend parents take this opportunity to speak with their kids about basic safety steps such as not texting and walking, avoiding shortcuts, walking with friends, and calling ahead if you are going to be delayed.”
Due to their high demand and portability, smart phones are extremely attractive for thieves. The high cost of these items is also driving people to purchase them online at discounted prices through various websites. This is resulting in additional robberies of potential buyers and sellers at agreed upon meeting places.
Additional tips for preventing mobile phone theft include:
• Avoid using your phone on the street in full view. If you do have to use it, be discreet
• Take note of the serial number of your phone and keep it in a safe place;
• Consider software that will remotely locate your phone using built-in GPS;
• In the event you are robbed of your phone, report it immediately to the police and contact your network provider so they can disconnect and prevent any unauthorized calls or texts;
• If arranging to meet with an unknown person for the purchase or sale of an item, avoid meeting in a secluded area and choose a safe public place where other persons are around.
The Surrey RCMP’s Robbery Unit and Neighbourhood Liaison Units continue to make progress on these incidents and have identified persons of interest.
