A construction worker was seriously injured Wednesday morning at the new Highstreet shopping centre under construction at Highway 1 and Mt. Lehman Road in Abbotsford.

Assistant Fire Chief Dave Rivett said the worker had been using a scissor lift when he was crushed between the lift and an overhead canopy.

Abbotsford Fire Rescue Services (AFRS) crews arrived just after 8 a.m. The worker was unconscious and suffering from head injuries.

Crews had to use the "jaws of life" to extricate the man from the bucket of the scissor lift.

The worker was first taken to Abbotsford Regional Hospital, and was then airlifted to Royal Columbian Hospital's trauma centre.

His condition is not known at this time.

This was the second industrial accident in Abbotsford in less than 24 hours. Another man was seriously injured at about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday when he was crushed between two pieces of machinery at Mutual Materials at 2979 McCallum Rd.

He was also airlifted to Royal Columbian Hospital.
