A White Rock woman is in critical condition in hospital following a head-on collision Sunday near Agassiz.

The 28-year-old was driving an older Mazda southbound on Highway 9 when her vehicle was hit around 4 p.m. by an older model Nissan that was heading northbound. Police say the driver of the Nissan, a 53-year-old Agassiz man, did not see the Mazda, and the vehicles crashed in the intersection of Highway 7.

The Nissan driver was taken to Chilliwack General Hospital with serious injuries. The White Rock woman was airlifted to a Lower Mainland hospital.

Three others who were travelling in the Mazda, including a 19-month-old child, were also treated for injuries. Police are crediting the proper use of a children's car seat with saving the toddler from serious injuries.

The highway was closed for several hours as a result of the crash.
