Remembering January Lapuz
Members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, transgendered, queer and/or intersex community, as well as their supporters, gathered at New Westminster city hall on Saturday to remember January Marie Lapuz, a transgendered woman who was murdered in her apartment in September. Organized by the Transtastic Coalition for Equality, the rally was also a call for greater safety and more protection in the charter of rights for their community. Following a traditional First Nations prayer by Chief Sandra Laframboise, and some short speeches, the rally marched to the provincial courthouse on Carnarvon Street for a candlelight vigil. Charles Jameson (Jamie) Neel, 20, was arrested Dec. 5 and charged with Lapuz’s murder.
