The Keg's Downtown New Westminster landmark location has laid off all of its staff while it is "closed for renovations" and its future fate determined.

The closure was necessary because some structural issues to the former Canadian Pacific Railway station, built in 1899, have come to the company's attention, said Keg spokeswoman Karyn Byrne from the corporate head office in Toronto. The Keg at the Station was closed on the weekend so the company can figure out how extensive the renovations will need to be before making any repairs.

"We just needed to finish up business for the time being," said Byrne. "It's still undetermined what evaluation will take place."

While The Keg's website says the New Westminster "location is now closed," Byrne said that was to make sure customers were aware it wasn't currently open for business and did not necessarily mean it was closed permanently.

New Westminster licensing and enforcement officer Keith Coueffin said the city is aware the brick building has structural issues, but has not received any applications for work permits on the building.

The Keg began occupying the space, which it currently leases, in 1973.
