Chilliwack RCMP officer receives fine for fatal crash
The RCMP officer involved in a fatal crash in Agassiz last July has received a fine of $1,725.
Const. Jordan Braid pleaded guilty in the crash, which killed Steven Genberg, a 20-year-old from Mission. The fine handed out in a Chilliwack courtroom last Thursday includes a $225 victim fine surcharge.
Braid admitted to driving without due car and attention, but the charge of dangerous driving causing death was stayed.
The crash led to an independent review carried out by the Abbotsford Police.
Braid, 23, was driving at a speed of 100 km/hr, on duty in an RCMP cruiser. Witnesses have said the lights and siren were not operating prior to the crash. Braid swerved to avoid a dog on the road, on the Lougheed Hwy near Bodnar Road, and crashed into Genberg's Ford Mustang.
Genberg's passenger, Jonathan Dauphney, 19, was injured in the accident. Both men were airlifted to hospital. Genberg died in hospital on July 18, 2011. He was expecting his first child with his girlfriend, and was working as a tow truck driver in Mission.
