NATURALLY HEALTHY: Looking back on your year of healthy living

Before I set new sights for the New Year I always like to look back over the year and see how far I’ve come.

Here are few things that were new for me in my office in 2012.

1. Brain health. I wrote a newsletter on Brain Health to prepare for a lecture I gave in April.

In researching for the lecture I learned that simply taking one capsule of Fast Relief Curcumin per day will slow the formation of amyloid plaque in the brain. Since then I have found another remedy that surpasses the research in absorption of this very good natural anti-inflammatory.

Curcumin may not only prevent Alzheimer’s but helps with irritable bowel syndrome, chronic inflammation of the joints and muscles and may prevent many cancers. Good to have in your daily regime of remedies!

2. Five to Thrive. This is my latest handout to support cancer patients in general.

These same “Five to Thrive” concepts are used to treat any chronic disease. Naturopathic medicine provides key nutrients to optimize the body’s anti-oxidant status, detoxification pathways, immune system, inflammatory pathways, and stress and mindfulness techniques. There are key nutrients that address all five at once to make preventing chronic disease easy for you!

3. Waist Management. Over the last year I have had many patients lose inches off their waist.

They have done this by avoiding the foods they are sensitive to through our EDS testing, they have been reading “The Wheat Belly” by Dr. Davis and they are controlling their cravings with nutrition. I have also updated my gluten free handouts throughout the year.

4. Heart Health. This year I did some research on better cardiovascular markers other than LDL and HDL cholesterol. What I found out is that MPO Cardiac and PLAC testing done through Cleveland Heart Lab are available through Life Labs.

If your MD won’t order them I am able to, and along with other testing I do, including CRP, homocysteine, fibrinogen and LDL size, we can give you a better picture of your risk of heart disease and stroke.

5. Fish oils: are you getting enough? With a new finger blood test from Rocky Mountain Analytical we can determine if you are getting the right ratios.

This is important not only for skin health, but brain, heart and immune health. We also have a new fish oil made from anchovies and sardines for those few of you who don’t like the Carlson’s lemon flavoured fish oil.

One teaspoon provides therapeutic doses of EPA and DHA as well as 1000IU’s of vitamin D. Come in for a taste!

6.  Genetic testing. Comprehensive digestive analysis and detoxification analysis can tell you how well you detoxify as well as the status of your digestive health.

These are available through Genova and Metametrix in the US if you would like to delve deeper into the causes of your chronic health condition. Genetic expression is modifiable through nutrition so these tests can help target nutritional therapy.

7. Beautification. I had my reception area painted a few months ago and new prints framed to add some new life into my office.

Every once in a while we need to take something old and add new life into it. This is also what we can do with our bodies.

Familiar yoga poses are used but they are combined together in such a beautiful combination, that after following the program for 30 minutes you feel more beautiful! Give it a try!

Whether you are losing inches by avoiding foods on your EDS list, taking your remedies regularly or moving your body regularly in fun ways, every small step contributes to better health, vigor and vitality. Add up what good changes you have made in your health and life over the last twelve months and give yourself a pat on the back before you consider adding more in the New Year!
