Police officers blitzed the Trans-Canada Highway Friday night, including the Cowichan Valley, resulting in numerous violations.

The campaign was intended to remind drivers police will be stepping up enforcement during the holiday season.

More than 7,000 vehicles were checked across Vancouver Island as part of the Light Up The Highway campaign. About 60 officers from multiple agencies, in partnership with ICBC, took part.

Preliminary results of the campaign included: three Criminal Code impaired driving cases, 18 three-day Immediate Roadside Prohibitions, 12 90-day IRPs, one prohibited driver, 14 drug seizures, two Criminal Code drug possession charges, 103 violation tickets, 48 Notice and Orders for vehicle defects and repair orders, one weapon seizure and 10 commercial vehicle inspections.

"Expect to see more of us over the holiday season,'' noted Cpl. Darren Lagan of the Island District RCMP.
