Old Boyd school building burns under suspicious circumstances
A fire at the old J.H. Boyd School site in Lake Cowichan is being deemed suspicious.
The volunteer Lake Cowichan Fire Department requested the attendance of the Lake Cowichan RCMP after extinguishing the fire. An RCMP fire investigator was brought in and made the determination the fire occurred under suspicious circumstances.
"The fire was located on the inside of the building near an entrance which was spreading into the rafters of the structure,'' pointed out Lake Cowichan RCMP Cpl. Larry Olson.
A quick response by Lake Cowichan firefighters prevented the building from sustaining more extensive damage.
The floor and ceiling are still unstable and potentially dangerous.
Lake Cowichan RCMP is continuing its investigation into the cause.
"This building is private property and any person found inside will be subject to trespassing charges,'' Olson indicated.
Witnesses who may have information to assist police are asked to contact the Lake Cowichan RCMP at 250-749-6668.
