Surrey house destroyed by fire Monday

At least five people are homeless after a dramatic fire destroyed their North Surrey home Monday night.

The home at 137 Street and 97A Avenue was fully engulfed with flames by the time firefighters arrived.

The fire originated in the garage area in the rear of the home, where there was a suite. There was also another suite inside the home as well as a main living area, firefighters say.

The blaze was extinguished fairly quickly, but damage was extremely extensive and the home will have to be torn down.

Neighbours told CTV News they believe the home was previously renovated and was used as a rooming house. The owner was not inside at the time.

All the residents have found temporary shelter from Emergency Social Services. Fire officials don’t know how the fire started.
