A 17-year-old female died after her car crashed through a power pole and into a tree around 8 a.m. Friday morning.

Upper Fraser Valley RCMP Traffic Services investigators determined speed was a factor, and she was not wearing a seatbelt.

Mission RCMP said in a press release that the red Honda Civic was travelling eastbound on the Lougheed Highway, when it left the highway east of Madaris Road and impacted the tree. She died at the scene as a result of her injuries, reads the release.

When North Fraser firefighters arrived, they extricated the girl, placing her in care of B.C. Ambulance paramedics.

The air ambulance was called out, and landed in a field directly across from the accident scene, but the driver was not flown out.

Lougheed Highway was closed in both directions for hours while RCMP traffic analysts reconstructed the scene.
