13-year-old Abbotsford girl groped in ongoing rash of sexual assaults

A 13-year-old girl was groped in one of two separate sexual assaults that occurred within minutes of each other in Abbotsford Tuesday afternoon.

The assault on the teen and another against a mother out with her child are linked to a rash of sexual attacks against women walking in the city, police said.

Const. Casey Vinet said police have received a total of 14 complaints within a month – including the two attacks Tuesday – from women who were groped by a man who then fled on foot.

Police issued a warning to the public about the first set of attacks last Wednesday.

"It's clear we're dealing with a prolific offender who will likely continue this behaviour until he's caught," said Vinet.

"We are doing everything we can to identify the suspect and get this guy into custody as soon as possible."

In all but one case, the victims were walking alone when they were approached by a man who grabbed at their chest area or smacked them on the behind.

In two instances, the man flashed his victims.

In Tuesday's attacks, a teen and woman were attacked within minutes of one another while walking along hydro lines northeast of Abbotsford Exhibition Park just after 3 p.m., said Vinet.

The 13-year-old girl was walking home from school when the suspect grabbed her breasts from behind before fleeing east along the path.

In the same area, a 27-year-old mother adjusting her child's sock was slapped on the behind as the suspect ran by.

"Although understandably troubled by what had happened, neither victim was seriously injured," said Vinet.

Officers responded to the area immediately and a dog unit was brought in , but the suspect was not located.

Investigators are treating the incidents as sexually motivated, said Vinet.

"We are very concerned the attacks could escalate into something more serious and we are urging women to take precautions."

Most attacks are concentrated in two hot spots within a half a kilometre of one another.

The majority have occurred along trails in Fishtrap Creek Park and the area surrounding the Abbotsford Exhibition Park, said Vinet.

The attacks have typically taken place mid- to late afternoon, but police are warning they could happen anywhere at anytime.

The suspect is described as a clean-shaven Caucasian man in his late teens or early 20s, with a slim to medium build and short blonde or light brown hair.

"We are looking to identify a witness who has enough of a description of the suspect that it could possibly be used in a composite drawing," said Vinet.

Abbotsford Police have detectives working full time on the case, he said.

"All of our officers are aware [of the attacks] happening and we're stepping up patrols in the areas where most of the attacks have occurred."

Investigators are looking closely at the possibility that the suspect lives close to where the attacks occurred, said Vinet.

"We're not ruling anything out," he said.

"Part of the process includes looking at sex offenders who are living in Abbotsford and more specifically in this area."

Investigators believe more women may come forward with previously unreported complaints, said Vinet.

Anyone with any information on the attacks is asked to call Det. Parker at 604-864-4735 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
