Canada Post, CUPW in negotiations

Members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) voted 94.5 per cent in favour of striking - if necessary.

CUPW National President Denis Lemelin cited such issues as pay reductions for new employees, reduced benefits, job security and pensions  and review of other contract items as being items up for negotiation by Canada Post.

According to Lemelin, the post office is about to announce its 16th consecutive year of profits. The corporation also plans to make huge productivity gains through modernization. Postal workers are saying they deserve a share of the benefits.

“A 94.5  per cent strike vote sends a clear message to Canada Post’’said Lemelin.”CUPW members want a collective agreement that recognizes our work is behind the increases in profits and productivity. They want management to share, instead of attacking our wages, rights and working conditions.”

A strike vote does not mean that there will be a work stoppage at Canada Post. The union has held strike votes during past rounds of collective bargaining without a work stoppage.

The union is not in a legal strike position and meetings between Canada Post and CUPW aimed at reaching a new collective agreement continue with the help of a conciliator. It is business as usual, and Canada Post does not anticipate any disruption to mail service at this time. The earliest date that CUPW could go on strike is May 25.

Canada Post remains optimistic that a negotiated settlement can be reached, as they bring to the table annual wage increases, a secure pension and continued job security.

 

Canada Post is also  proposing a new sick leave program along with  different terms and conditions for new employees. Competition and electronic substitutions of traditional mail are growing and putting a strain on business as the corporation negotiates with an eye to maintaining Canada Post’s competitiveness.
