Fly fishing isn't just for old guys anymore

The Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC will be offering two one-day introductory courses on the art of fly fishing on July 11 and 12 at the Kootenay Trout Hatchery.

“Last year’s program was a tremendous success,” said Kootenay Trout Hatchery visitor coordinator Leanne Jones. “This year we’ve expanded the available spaces and tailored our fly fishing courses for specific age groups.”

The workshop will be held at the Kootenay Trout Hatchery for anglers 16 and older on Saturday, July 11, and for anglers aged 9-15 on Sunday, July 12, beginning at 9 a.m.. Participants will learn the basics of fly casting, rod set-up, fly selection, fish handling and fishing ethics. Participants will also get the opportunity to practice fishing in the incredible Bull River.

The course costs $75 per person (including a gourmet lunch) and participants over the age of 16 are also required to possess a valid B.C. fishing licence and a classified waters permit for the Bull River. Instruction will begin on the hatchery grounds and then move to the Bull River. Participants should bring their own fly fishing equipment, but some rods and reels will be available for loan.

Individuals and groups interested in this workshop or in hatchery tours, special programs, regional lake stocking information or free fishing tips can contact the Kootenay Trout Hatchery at 250-429-3214, or visit our website at: www.gofishbc.com.
