Volunteer: Hospital auxiliaries to KGH Foundation: ‘Together We Save Lives’

The KGH Foundation has four hospital auxiliaries that they are proud to have under their umbrella: Kelowna Hospital Auxiliary, Peachland Auxiliary, Rutland Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Store and Winfield Hospital Auxiliary.

These groups of enterprising members and non-member volunteers, operate many different business enterprises that raise funds for the sole purpose of assisting in the purchase of medical equipment for the ongoing care and comfort of the patients of KGH.

KHA, being the largest in number of members and volunteers, operates the hospital Centennial Mercantile (gift shop), the Royal Bistro (deli) and the Perking Lot (coffee bar).  They also have an engraving business which does signage for UBCO, many local service groups and for many departments at KGH.

Volunteers ages range between 14 and 95.

A strong Youth Program is a tremendous asset to the operations and has been a catalyst for many students to garner work experience, hours toward graduation, scholarship opportunities as well as  entrance to post-secondary programs.

The more senior volunteers offer strong mentorship to these youth and are very committed to the services they offer to the staff, patients and visitors to KGH.  As well they have an opportunity to make long lasting friendships and simply have fun working toward a common goal. In the past years this Auxiliary has raised over $10 million.

The Rutland Hospital Auxiliary operates the Rutland Thrift Store and this past year celebrated 50 years of operation and has raised over $3.5 million. Many of the volunteers and members have been there for years but, as in any organization, new volunteers are always required to keep business operating at full tilt.  Students are encouraged to volunteer and as well are able to start at a very early age.

The Thrift Store offers items from every day clothing and housewares to valuable collectibles.  Again all the revenue, after expenses, is used to help save lives.

Winfield Auxiliary is a group of enterprising women with 58 years of service under their belts. Their fund raising efforts are predominantly fuelled by catering and special events that they hold each year.

Peachland Auxiliary is a wonderful group of individuals who bake and cater to large events every year and again make a strong impact on the medical equipment purchases at KGH.

It’s truly remarkable how these groups together make it possible every day to help save lives at KGH. Not only are they involved in raising funds toward the purchase of medical equipment but they supply many deserving students, moving forward in the human medical field, an opportunity to apply for scholarships through the COBBS program offered at their high schools.

These amazing organizations only survive by increasing their membership which in turn helps to ensure that the hospital auxiliary legacy does not end and the business venues that are the main source of driving revenue can only do what they do by adding to their volunteer rosters.
