A new you for the new year
For many who are planning to make a positive change in their lives this new year by improving their health and fitness, the options available can be overwhelming.
But just by stepping foot in a gym, you will be heading down the path to a better you, says Marie Bellavance, general manager of Tsawwassen Athletic Club/Fitwells for Women on 56th Street.
As a personal trainer and gym manager for the past 20 years, Bellavance has seen her fair share of people attempt to get healthy for their new year’s resolution, and there are a number of things that separate those that succeed, from those who don’t.
First of all, Bellavance says it’s important to manage your expectations of yourself, and make sure they are realistic.
“Some people think they have to go to the gym everyday, and when they can’t do that they get discouraged,” she says. “They overdo it, and they end up quitting.”
But even if you only come to the gym one more day a week, that’s still progress, assures Bellavance.
By keeping your goals small and attainable, you are more likely to stick with your fitness program.
Seeking help from trained staff or a professional trainer is also a great way to get on the right path.
“Personal trainers are great, because not only can they custom tailor a fitness and nutrition plan specifically to your goals and abilities, they also help motivate you and keep you accountable,” says Bellavance.
It’s easy to blow off a trip to the gym, but if there’s somewhere there waiting for you, you are less likely to skip a day, she notes.
While the gym may be an intimidating place to the uninitiated, a personal trainer can walk you through all of the equipment that’s available and show you how to use it.
For those looking to get fit this new year, the Tsawwassen fitness centre Bellavance operates is the perfect place to start down the path to good health.
The 28,000-square foot facility features both the co-ed Tsawwassen Athletic Club, as well as the Fitwells for Women Health and Weight Loss Centre. In addition to having all the latest equipment, the fitness centre also hosts a variety of classes - including Zumba, yoga, and spinning - and features a childminding centre, a sauna and tanning salon, and a nutritious shake bar.
Nutrition is a key component of any health plan, says Bellavance, which is why the fitness centre offers nutritious diet plans for members.
“You can’t out-train a bad diet,” she says. “It’s one thing to work on the outside of your body, but it matters so much what you put into it.”
Whatever steps you may take this new year to improve your health, Bellavance says it is important to look at the big picture.
“Being fit is a lifestyle,” she says. “Exercise and proper nutrition, those are things you need to do all round, not just in January and February.”
