SENIORS SCENE: Celebrate season with family skates

On behalf of all the staff at the Kent Street Activity Centre, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy New Year.

• To celebrate the festive season, take the grandchildren for some quality family skating time at Centennial Arena.

The themes for upcoming skates are: Tuesday, Dec. 24 is Clowning Around; Friday, Dec. 27 is Tacky Sweater Skate; Saturday, Dec. 28 is Hockey Jersey Skate; Sunday, Dec. 29 White Rock Leisure Services is providing free hot chocolate; Monday, Dec. 30 is Get Crafty; and Tuesday, Dec. 31 is the Rocking New Year’s Eve skate.

Holiday break skates are 12:30-2:30 p.m. each day, and admission is only $3.25.

If so, why not try our yoga classes starting the second week of January at the White Rock Community Centre?

Techniques taught encourage optimal breathing, clearing of the mind, and relaxing the nervous system to regain health and vitality. Yoga is very beneficial for people with a variety of medical conditions.

Have you always wanted to learn Spanish but didn’t know where to start?

Beginner Spanish with instructor Carlos Rabago will be held on Thursday afternoons at the Kent Street Activity Centre.

This six-session course begins Jan. 23, providing basic conversational instruction in a supportive, informal setting.

Kent Street members can hone their newly developed skills in the Conversational Spanish activity group, held Thursday mornings at 10 a.m. in the Kent Street library.

• Walking Qi Gong (chee gung) is a basic meditative walking style, employing special breathing techniques, and easy-to-learn arm and hand movements.

Simple variations add to its therapeutic effects.

Through regular practice, stress is relieved, co-ordination and balance are improved, and the immune system is strengthened.

This program will be starting on Jan. 13 at Kent Street. Call for more information and to register at 604-541-2199.

• Are you in need of some legal advice?

On Wednesday, Jan. 8, at 9:30 a.m., local lawyer Alan Benson will be at Kent Street to answer any legal queries that you may have.

Appointments are on a first-come, first-served basis.

Visits at the centre are free of charge for those 55+ on low income; the usual lawyer’s fee will be charged for any additional visits away from the centre or when any legal work is done.

• There are lots more recreational opportunities for adults aged 55-plus.
