At Carihi we’re just as excited about wrapping presents and lighting candles as an elf in Santa’s workshop.

But Carihi Mirror had one question about the spirited mood: what is the true meaning of Christmas?

To find the answer, we asked some students what traditions found in the old holiday carols they partake in.

Here’s what they said...

  • Carihi Mirror: Do you really roast chestnuts on an open fire?

Evan: No

Whryeita: No

Joe: No

Connor: Oh yeah. Metaphorically though.

  • CM: Are you dreaming of a white Christmas?

Evan: Not in our town.

Connor: No, I’m dreaming about a girl.

Eli: Yes I am…If you know what I mean.

  • CM: Do you rock around the Christmas tree?

Whryeita: Sounds like fun. No I haven’t. Not yet.

Clayton: Occasionally.

Connor: Yes. Both ways. It’s a conceptual thing.

  • CM: Do you deck your halls with boughs of holly?

Whyreita: No. I don’t want to prick my finger.

Taylor: Isn’t it bells and holly?

Eli: Falalalalalalalalala

  • CM: Is Santa Claus coming to town?

Clayton: If there’s enough Christmas spirit.

Taylor: No.

Eli: What are you talking about, Taylor? I saw him at the mall. He’ll be there!

  • CM: Will you be getting coal this Christmas? If so, why?

Evan: Yes. No comment.

Joe: Yes.

Eli: No, my dad didn’t pay the hydro bill. It will be cold this Christmas.

Judging by this interview, holiday traditions are no longer relevant in this growing age of sarcasm and mockery. So, we’re still left wondering, what is the meaning of Christmas? If you have an answer, please email us. We’re dying to know.
