New church plant in Penticton
Lakelands Church is a new church plant in Penticton pastored by Ed and Rebekah Gin.
Pastor Ed was born and raised in Penticton and eventually left to pursue a degree at the University of British Columbia. During his time away, he and his wife, Rebekah, served on the pastoral team at Trinity Church in Victoria.
After several years, they felt God calling them to return to Pastor Ed’s home town to start a church which they named Lakelands Church. Their desire is to worship and serve Jesus and reach out to the Penticton community with His love and grace.
The concept of a church plant is not new. Church plants have a history that go back to the New Testament. The Book of Acts especially describes the spontaneous growth of the church among new believers as they became exposed to the Gospel of Christ. There were no cultural barriers or boundaries to prevent believers from coming together into the Kingdom of God. This growth was dynamic and organic.
“The blue print for starting a new church is in the Bible where it describes the ministry of Jesus and His disciples as well as the Apostle Paul’s ministry as he evangelized and planted churches,” said Pastor Ed.
“It is this mandate, spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ, that Rebekah and I are following. It’s about Christ’s sacrifice, it’s about the free gift of salvation and it’s about what God has available to those who believe in Jesus Christ as our Saviour.”
Pastor Ed and Rebekah work very closely together. They do not see Lakelands Church as one might normally think of as ‘church’ - it’s not formal, it’s not religious and the focus is not on the programs.
As Rebekah puts it: “We seek a spirit-filled relationship with Jesus Christ. It’s not just about Sunday but it’s to see Jesus expressed in our lifestyle
seven days a week. We want to foster this kind of relationship within our church family and in our community and we invite those who do not yet know Jesus to join us on this journey”.
This is not the first church plant stemming from Trinity Church in Victoria. Two other church plants have taken place in the past five years - one in Montreal and the other in Vancouver. Interestingly, both pastors are married to Rebekah’s sisters.
Consequently, both Pastor Ed and Rebekah are well aware that this is not an easy task to plant a church, particularly with a young family. They have two children, Justice is three years old and Haven recently had her first birthday.
Pastor Ed is a consultant for a natural resource consulting firm in Victoria, work which he can do from home. He also takes part-time work in Penticton when it becomes available. Rebekah is a photographer who had many clients on Vancouver Island but is now looking forward to taking on photography projects in the Okanagan.
Juggling time and responsibilities are a daily event and necessary so that they can meet the commitments to their personal family as well as to the Lakelands Church family.
To ensure the health and growth of their new church, Pastor Ed and Rebekah have partnered with an apostolic team - New Covenant Ministries International (NCMI).
NCMI is not a denomination or any church-like organization. It does not have memberships or any system of imposed authority. It is an apostolic/prophetic team made up of gifted men and women from around the world, who come from many different backgrounds and are linked together through friendship, a common ministry vision and a set of biblical values. As such, their insight and guidance are invaluable to a new church plant.
Pastor Ed and Rebekah recognize the many wonderful churches in Penticton and it is their desire to work with them to better and more effectively serve the community.
Pastor Ed meets with the other pastors to share vision, deepen relationships and communicate what is in their hearts for the city of Penticton.
Lakelands Church is at the beginning stages and has a small core of families who are excited to see what the Lord has in store! They meet on the second floor of Penticton Community Centre every Sunday at 2 p.m. Pastor Ed shares the Gospel and Rebekah leads worship. At the end, there is a time for fellowship and refreshments. Children’s facilities are also available.
Everyone is welcome. Come and visit and share this journey as followers of Christ and embark on the road to the Kingdom of God. You can contact them at email@example.com.
