Comox Valley Paddlers Club meeting next week
Are you one of the many who are envious of those free spirited people paddling on blue waters by the Dyke Road in their colourful kayaks, while you drive by?
Are you inspired knowing that many of those same independent spirits out there on the ocean are old enough to be your grandparent and are getting more fit as they age?
Many of those paddlers are new to the sport, and many are members of the growing Comox Valley Paddlers Club. If you are curious about kayaking and want to know how to get started, attend the next meeting on Thursday, Jan. 10 at 7 p.m. at the Lion's Den, 1729 Comox Ave.
Experienced kayakers will want to learn about opportunities within the club, in particular, in January, about wilderness kayaking vacations and adventure expeditions. The club's short business meeting is followed by speaker, Dave Pinel, sea kayaking guide and managing owner of Westcoast Expeditions [ www.westcoast expeditions.com].
All of their tours include instruction to ensure that you are comfortable with the kayaking basics and trips start and end with the comforts and conveniences of their unmatched Wilderness Retreat base camp. Tours are tailored for specific needs of individuals or groups and can run from 3 days to 9 day expeditions.
The company received national exposure when the Globe and Mail's Travel section two years ago featured Dave and Westcoast Expeditions. Pinel also teaches and co-ordinates Coastal Adventure Tourism programs at North Island College, where students learn the latest marine-based guiding and tourism skills.
