SENIORS SCENE: Now is the time to start planning 2013 activities

It’s not too early to plan for 2013.

Limited seating is still available for the Jan. 17 Amtrak/Seattle excursion. Peruse the stores at two of Washington’s top shopping destinations. Shop at Trader Joe’s and Alderwood Mall, with time to enjoy a delicious lunch at Pike Street Market.

Finish the day with a ride on the Amtrak to Bellingham, where the mini-coach will meet you. Avoid disappointment and register today, 604-541-2199.

• It’s time to get your toes tapping.

Choose from a wide variety of ballroom dance classes and get exercise while having fun. Learn the graceful steps of the cross-step waltz or get energized through the rumba, cha cha or salsa. Move to the romantic slow tempo of the night club two-step or bring out your inner cowboy learning the country two-step.

There is something for everyone. Classes begin Jan. 15 at the Kent Street Activity Centre. Register for a singles session to dance with other singles, or if you are part of a couple, register together. Call 604-541-2199.

• Feeling like you need a little bit of a confidence boost with your driving?

Sign up for the Jan. 14 Mature Driving Workshop and self-assess your driving skills and habits. Update your knowledge of vehicle safety features and road regulations. Call 604-541-2199 to register for this free workshop, co-sponsored with White Rock Community Policing and BCAA.

• There’s no need to spend the holidays alone.

If you are looking to enjoy a delicious holiday meal in good company, there are dinners to attend.  The First United Church (at Buena Vista Avenue and Centre Street) will be holding a community dinner on Dec. 20 at 4:30 p.m. (a small donation is requested to join). They will also be holding a complimentary Christmas Day lunch on Dec. 25 at 12:30 p.m.

Additionally, the Star of the Sea Hall (15262 Pacific Ave.) will be holding an Uptown Community Christmas Dinner (no charge) on Dec. 15. Enjoy live music and delicious food; dinner will be served from 6-8:30pm.

• On behalf of the staff at the Kent Street Activity Centre, we wish you a very happy holiday. The Kent Street Centre will be closed Dec. 22, 25, 26, 29 and Jan. 1. Pick up a copy of the Kent Street Update to reference the 2012 end dates and 2013 start dates for activity groups.

The Kent Street Activity Centre, located at 1475 Kent St., is open to people 55 years of age or better. For information, call 604-541-2231.
