Scoring touch for Warfield native

Warfield native Craig Cunningham is playing big-time hockey with the Vancouver Giants this year holding on to first place in WHL scoring with five goals and eight assists in eight games.
Last year, the Giants placed first in the B.C. Division standings with 119 points in 72 games Cunningham said the team is hoping to work off their success last year.
“I had a good season last year, we were and still are a young team, but I think we learned a lot last year and things are going good so far,” he said.
Cunningham said the team has four 16-year-olds but what they lack in experience they make up for in determination.
In the 2008/2009 season, Cunningham played 72 games with the Vancouver Giants potting 28 goals and 22 assists, taking third on the team in goals, seventh in points and eighth in assists.
He had a very successful year with a career-high, six-game scoring streak from December 13 to December 30 with nine points over the stretch.
Also tying the lead in shorthanded goals — he ended the season with a plus/minus rating of plus 28.
“We’re trying to stay focused and play a little better in the post season this year,” said Cunningham, a former Beaver Valley Nitehawk who took third in the western conference during last year’s WHL playoffs.
“I think as long as we keep working hard and play as a team we can win in any game we play.”
The 19-year-old left-winger is looking forward to having a successful year with the Giants and doesn’t know where his future lies but is pushing for the big leagues in the next few years.
