The Trail Smoke Eaters have chalked up their first win of the season with a 7-2 knockout against the Williams Lake Timberwolves in front of the home crowd at the Cominco arena on Sept. 27.

After going 0-6 in their first six games the team came to the rink prepared to play and offered a great team effort.

Sam Mellor and Tye Lewis potted two goals a piece in the afternoon outing pushing the game into the Smokies hands early on.

“It was a good game for us, we all chipped in and we’re looking to keep it going in the next few games,” said Vancouver, WA., native Lewis.

Keifer Smiley played a solid game saving 36 of 38 shots giving the team the edge to take the win.

“I think physically we played better, played with more emotion and better overall on the defense,” said Jim Ingram, head coach of the Smoke Eaters.

“It was good to get the win and get us worked out of the funk we were in.”

The Smokies played the Quesnel Millionaires the night before losing out 5-1,.Coming back for their first win on Sept. 27 could give the Smokies the push they need to start the positives in their season.

The Smokies looked strong on the ice in their win with great offensive and defensive playmaking. The team has a tough couple of games ahead in the next two weeks playing some of the better clubs in their division.

They play in Penticton against the number one team in the division Oct. 2, face Burnaby at home Oct. 3 and Merrit on the road Oct. 6. The Smokies are gearing up and hoping they can get on the winning wagon.

“We’re in a tough division, these four or five teams we’re against coming up are very solid teams, they have a few of the top players in the division and we’ll have our work cut out for us,” said Ingram.

“We have to play our game and learn as we go.”
