Never forget the sacrifice

Remembrance Day is fast approaching.
It is supposed to be a day off to reflect on and honour the sacrifices made by the men and women of the armed forces to ensure not only our safety, but also of people around the world.
It seems like Remembrance Day loses its meaning all too often these days. Every year, the number of veterans of the World Wars decreases, along with ceremony participants.
Maybe that’s because the tradition of Remembrance Day has forever been rooted to the end of the First World War. As we move farther away from that date, the stories and survivors decrease, the stories become merely written word for the history books.
We often lose sight of the fact new soldiers are taking up the cause everyday.
That’s why the departing of a local group of soldiers for Afghanistan last week has impeccable timing.
Their call to duty overseas acts as the perfect reminder there is still conflicts for which people are ready to sacrifice and put their lives on the line.
While the reasons for war maybe changing the dedication and sacrifice has not.
And never forget the sacrifices made by soldiers’ families. It is their selfless dedication and support towards their moms, dads, husbands, wives and sons and daughters that gives many of the courage to face the unknown.
