The Canadian shortage of H1N1 vaccine has resulted in the cancellation of many of the next mass vaccination clinics for high-risk patients around the province and in the greater Trail area.

Due to a ‘significantly smaller’ number of vaccinations received Interior Health will only hold four clinics next week.

“Clinics will be postponed as of now but we’re expecting they will go ahead at some point. I haven’t heard of a date internally but we will possibly have them the following week,” said Karl Hardt, communications co-ordinator with Interior Health.

“This is based on supply in the area already so it’s kind of wait and see at this point.”

Lillooet, Nakusp, Sparwood and Princeton will be the only locations with high-risk immunization clinics in the Interior Health area next week.

These locations were chosen based on available supply, proximity to larger clinics and because they have not had clinics as of yet.

Those in the high-risk category in communities with no mass clinic are directed to check with their physician or walk-in clinics to see if they have remaining vaccines.

Mass immunizations will be re-established for the general public if significant supply is commenced by mid-November.

A limited supply of unadjuvanated H1N1 vaccine is expected to begin arriving in the Interior Health region during the week of Nov. 9, pregnant women are encouraged to contact their health care provider to discuss and receive the vaccine.
