Loblaws Canada has decided to close down their Shop Easy grocery store in Salmo leaving a number of villagers out of work and one option for grocery shopping in town.

The official date of closure set for Dec. 5, some are concerned about the loss of a local business to foreign ownership and are asking why.

“It’s going to be hard on the elderly, we have another store, but it is more of a specialty store and the isles are a little smaller making life a little difficult for some,” said Gwen Schimmel, a resident of Salmo.

“What are we supposed to do, there are no buses or taxis coming through here to go to other stores, a lot of people are going to be buggered.”

Loblaws Canada has said in a statement that the location is “no longer economically viable to operate,” have no plans to open another Loblaws store and could not release any further details about the location at this time.

Loblaws, based out of Ontario owns more than 1,000 corporate and franchised stores across Canada and carries over 139,000 full and part time employees.

The managers of the Shop Easy in Salmo, Maggie and Peter Stayanovich have declined to comment as they are still affiliated with Loblaws, but say they are exploring a few options to possibly avoid the closure although no agreements have been reached.

The 12 employees of the Shop Easy will have until Dec. 12 before they are released and some have said the location may sit idle due to Loblaw’s lease on the building.

“It is a corporate decision by someone who doesn’t know what it means to us,” said Salmo Mayor Ann Henderson.
