A fire broke out at Teck Trail Operations after midnight on July 2.
The No. 2 slag fuming furnace caught fire at 12:40 a.m., prompting the Teck Trail Operations Fire Department and the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary Fire Department to rush to the scene.
The fire was extinguished after approximately two hours.
There were no injuries to employees and there was no impact to other areas of the facility.
The cause of the fire, the extent and estimate of the damages, as well as the time required to repair damage will not be available until after a full investigation is completed.
The No. 2 slag fuming furnace is part of the recycling process for end-of-life electronics.
As a result of the incident, some of the clean water used to fight the fire was directly discharged into the Columbia River. Teck’s normal environmental procedures to identify and assess the environmental impact has already been initiated.
