The Trail Curling Association (TCA) is throwing their rocks in style now with recent upgrades to their concession and inserts to the rocks that tallied a big chunk of cash over the summer.

The City of Trail paid the bill for the rock inserts with the total coming to $37,000 for the original rocks that have been on the ice in town for over 50 years.

“The rocks would cost about $100,000 to completely replace all of them. The new inserts will improve the quality of the rocks and add another 10 years to their life,” said Larry Plotnikoff, director of parks and recreation with the City of Trail.

The insert of the rock is basically the running surface of the rock, it is generally three to six millimetres thick and is the core of the rock.

The new inserts are made of blue hone granite and will make the rocks curl faster and smoother.

The TCA also teamed up with the Columbia Basin Trust and the City of Trail to fully renovate the curling club’s concession area.

The upgrades included complete electrical, lighting and plumbing renovations plus a new glass washer, pop cooler, ice cube maker and cupboards among other things.

“The concession upgrades were badly needed,” said Frank Jorgensen, the former finance chairman of the TCA who oversaw the renovations.

“We started at the end of May this year and finished at the end of August. It went according to plan aside from a few minor difficulties.”

Funds allocated to the concession project came to $20,000 from the TCA, $10,000 chipped in from the CBT and the City of Trail supporting with $16,000.
