The City of Rossland is preparing to celebrate the best of mountain culture with numerous events slated for this year’s Rossland Mountain Film Festival (RMFF) on Nov. 19-22.
Presented by the Nelson and District Credit Union, the festival will cram a mountain culture photo exhibit, gala film celebrations, all ages and late show film screenings, live music, workshops and a guest speaker into four days.
“It’s coming into motion now,” said Jessica Haist, one of the organizers of the festival.
“This is the 10th annual event. We have more money to work with and we’re not raising our ticket prices, it should be a lot of fun.”
Films will cover the realms of adrenaline action sports such as skiing and snowboarding, mountain climbing and biking, base-jumping and whitewater rafting, while also covering documentary topics like avalanche awareness and conservationism among others.
Haist said there’s about 40 per cent local Kootenay talent on the big screen this year and almost all the youth films in the under-19 film fest are from the local area.
The festival will kick off Nov. 19 with a gala event at the Old Fire Hall including films, entertainment, appetizers and drinks.
The Mountain Culture Photo Exhibit will show off some of the best still shots all weekend at the Rouge Gallery opening on Nov. 19 and closing on Nov. 22.
All-ages film screenings will commence at 5 p.m. Nov. 20 and 21 and the late shows both dates at 7:30 p.m. at the Miner’s Hall.
The late shows at the Miner’s Hall will be followed by some mountain lovin’ music with rockers The Dudes on Nov. 20 and Five Alarm Funk on Nov. 21. The Under-19 Film Festival will showoff their stuff 12-3 p.m. at the Miners Hall on Nov. 21.
Aspiring action adventure journalists take note, industry professionals will be holding their workshops at the Rock Cut Pub on Nov. 21 with two very special guests speaking and teaching on their areas of expertise.
Kari Medig is a Canadian action adventure and commercial photographer who has travelled the world with his camera His work can be seen at www.karimedigphoto.com.
Following Medig will be a heavy player in the mountain culture publications world, Nelson-based writer, publisher and self-described ‘adventure storyteller’ Mitchell Scott will be holding his ‘mountain culture scribe’ workshop.
Scott has been writing professionally for over a decade, he is a senior correspondent for Powder Magazine, BIKE Magazine, SBC Skier, has contributed to The Globe and Mail, Outside and Blue magazines and is the current publisher/editor of Kootenay Mountain Culture Magazine.
