This weekend the trails at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort will be full of downhill racers, as the rivalry between BC and Alberta heats up for the Western Canada Cup.

The Western Downhill Mountain Bike Race will be taking place at the resort from July 11 to 12, with the Cup being awarded to the winning province on the Sunday. The race is being presented by the Alberta Downhill Racing Association.

“We are excited to be hosting the first annual Western Cup in the Kicking Horse mountain bike park,” said events manager Jordan Petrovics.

The 200 vertical foot course is being run on three downhill trails at KHMR, with riders being split into groups dependent on age and skill level.

Prizes are offered for those riders who place, as well as draw prizes. The main prize, of course, is the Western Canada Cup, which will go to the province with the most points at the end of the weekend. Each rider that places above fifth place will win points for their province.

“We have created a beautiful Western Canada Cup that will be on display at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort for bragging rights,” said Stephen Exley, board member with ADHRA.

Racers can register in advance at www.karelo.com. This event is part of the Alberta Cup series, which will allow riders to earn points toward that cup.
