MLA Norm Macdonald named NDP Caucus Chair
Last week, the New Democrat Caucus chose MLA Norm Macdonald to be caucus Chair. The caucus also elected three other executive positions. The results are:
Whip: Katrine Conroy, MLA Kootenay West, Caucus vice-chair: Doug Routley, MLA Nanaimo – North Cowichan and Deputy whip: Raj Chouhan, MLA Burnaby – Edmonds.
The elected position is voted on each year and Macdonald explained that having run the rural caucus for the past four years has prepared him for his new position.
“This position is an extension of that and comes with more responsibility. As you become more experienced (in politics) you become ready to take on more responsibilities.”
Macdonald’s new position will see him preside over the caucus meetings.
“It is my job to work to prepare the meeting agendas and make sure the meeting is run efficiently while making sure that members are able to express themselves in a respectful manner.”
That requires being very organized explained Macdonald, adding that meetings run daily while the House is in session and every two weeks while it is not.
“It is something that I am very pleased with and I look forward to working to organize the group.”
Macdonald said he is pleased that his peers have confidence in him adding that the success of the team is all part of the success of the organization.
Macdonald said that the Chair is an important figure when the party is in opposition and an important link between cabinet and the backbench when the party is in government.
