Practicing safety on Halloween
Halloween came a little early this year for (l to r) Kaylee Robertson, Molly Caldwell, Douglas Caldwell, Robert Caldwell and Leah Michener who were enjoying the town Halloween party at the Golden Civic Centre on Saturday, October 24.
With the spookiest day of the year just around the corner, we are reminded of a few basic safety tips to help maximize our enjoyment.
In a recent press release, the BCAA Traffic Safety Foundation reminds us that Halloween is one of the busiest nights of the year to be driving . There are more pedestrians out on the road and most of them are children. This year Halloween falls on a Saturday, a night that typically has higher instances of impaired driving, so road safety is extra important.
Allan Lamb, executive director of BCAA Safety Foundation, says that with all the excitement children may forget to watch for moving vehicles.
Corporal Dave Kronlund, RCMP Golden branch, says that in his experience Halloween in Golden is not much of a problem. Kronlund added that the RCMP will have extra people out that night. One of the main concerns is people using fireworks inappropriately. Motorist driving safety is also important.
Kronlund recommends a few safety tips for parents and their children who go out trick-or-treating:
Make sure to stay in well lit areas
Stay on the sidewalk
Wear reflective clothing
Parents go with children, depending on their age
Use common sense
Take safety precautions
Examine food items
