Last week, a local musician performed for an energetic and eager audience of young children and parents in the Alexander Park gymnasium.

Jackie Ohnander performed at the Ready, Set, Musical Family night. The evening was part of a Family Week series of events hosted at various venues around town. Children were regaled with singing and actions as Ohnander had her hands full sharing her musical gift.

Ohnander says she moved to Golden a little under a year ago and already she’s more than busy teaching music lessons to children in Invermere and Golden. Ohnander’s lessons follow a Music for Young Children (MYC) program that reaches children of all ages. She explains she was attracted to teach the MYC program because of the high quality students it produces.

“I taught private students that went through the MYC program and I was amazed at their rhythm, ability and overall knowledge. I looked into MYC because I thought it was good for children and I went to get my credentials for teaching the program.”

The MYC program teaches a bit of everything, says Ohnander, keyboard, singing, ensemble, sight singing, composition, music history and theory.

“Through the program I teach children from two to nine, in four different levels of classes: Sunrise, Sunshine, Sunbeam and Moonbeam.

Ohnander says her musical education began when she was just five years old learning classical piano. She has since gone on to receive a host of credentials including a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance (BMUS) from a reputable school in Brandon, Manitoba. She also has certifications from the Associate of the Royal Conservatory of Music (ARCT) and is a Registered Music Teacher in BC (RMT). Ohnander offers both MYC and private lessons.

“Some of my students just want to learn songs they hear on the radio, other students want hear the music used for the Royal Conservatory of Music exam,” says Ohnander.

She says also enjoys playing music in town with different groups and friends. Since last spring she has been rehearsing with Purcell Mountain Orchestra.

“I love classical music, that’s what I went to school for. But I’m having fun just jamming with people in town too.”
