Celebrating World Food Day at APES
Students at Alexander Park Elementary were happy to sample all of the delicious bread brought in for World Food Day in 2008.
This week, Alexander Park Elementary School (APES) will celebrate World Food Day.
World Food day at APES is an event where all the families of the schoolchildren make a different kind of bread. The children then bring the bread to school and enjoy a buffet of bread in the gymnasium while learning about different cultural foods.
Laurie MacDougall, APES teacher and librarian, says, “The idea is to honour all of the cultures in Golden and to bring in grain products that reflect culture. Last year we had roti bread from India, dark German breads, perogies, bagels, squares and cookies. We had donations from Golden Bakery, Sobey’s and Overwaitea too. We also receive enormous support from the families, the amount of bread they bring in is incredible.”
World Food Day was proclaimed in 1979 by the Conference of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
