To celebrate 40 years in Canada, 7-Eleven stores across the country gave away nearly half a million free Slurpees.

On Saturday, July 11, Golden’s 7-Eleven store, along with every other store in Canada, handed out 1,000 7.11-ounce Slurpee drinks to customers.

The annual giveaway is the largest of its kind in Canada with 461,000 free Slurpees up for grabs. It has been held for the past eight years on 7-Eleven Day or July 11 – the eleventh day of the seventh month.

“We look forward to 7-Eleven Day every year because it’s our chance to say thank you to our customers,” said Tim Donegan, 7-Eleven’s Canadian division vice president, adding, “Their support and loyalty has kept 7-Eleven strong for 40 years in Canada. Now it’s our turn to give back.”

For the tenth consecutive year, Manitoba has been crowned the Slurpee Capital of the World for having the highest average number of Slurpee cups sold per store in a region. The city received competition from Calgary and Southwest Detroit, with Calgary clinching second place for slurping up Slurpees.

7-Eleven has another reason to celebrate this season with the launch of a new Slurpee flavour, G-Force Fruit Punch from the maker of Gatorade, exclusive to Slurpee and 7-Eleven.

In 2008, Canadians drank an average of 2.25 million Slurpees per month for a total of more than 27 million Slurpees.
