On July 18 parks across the country will celebrate the twentieth anniversary of Parks Day.

Activities are planned at national, provincial and territorial parks throughout Canada, as well as in national historic sites. To add to the special celebrations this year, there has been a partnership formed with the International Year of Astronomy to provide even more fun events.

“We thought that it would be a really good way of putting them together,” said Laurie Collette, Parks Day Co-ordinator with the Canadian Parks Council.

This year marks the 400th anniversary of Galileo first looking up at the sky through a telescope, said a press release. Many parks offer remote locations and dark skies, which provide good viewing options for looking up at the constellations that Galileo first saw centuries ago.

In this area, activities are planned at Yoho, Glacier and Banff National Parks to celebrate both Parks Day and the Year of Astronomy. Yoho will be offering presentations of the Spiral Tunnels at 8 p.m., hosted by Kristi Putnam of the Field Community Centre. For those who want to do a bit of star-gazing, they can head over to the Field ball diamond to look up at the stars with Troy Hudson at 10 p.m.. To cap off the celebration, there will be cupcakes at the Visitor Centre.

“People can celebrate what we have out there and all the beauty we have in Canadian Parks,” said Collette.
