Wolf Centre in Dragon's Den

This fall the Wolf Centre will tear onto the international stage on an episode of CBC’s show Dragons’ Den. Shelley Black, who owns and runs the Wolf Centre with her husband Casey travelled to Toronto during the first week of June to enter the Dragons’ Den. “We went so we could put some more capital back in our business,” explained Black.
For those that have never watched the show, entrepreneurs, and small business owners approach the panel of “Dragons” to pitch ideas and seek capital. The dragons are made up of a group of business moguls and entrepreneurs.
Black explained that the biggest part of preparing for the trip and the pitch was the mental preparation. She also had to prepare all of her numbers for the show.
“They called us a month prior and producers drilled me about numbers,” said Black.
“I was asking for $250,000,” said Black. “It would change (the Wolf Centre) because we could give the centre a facelift and use it for advertising.”
The show is taped in Toronto, so Black took the flight to make her pitch to the Dragons. Along with her went Aspen, one of the wolves from the centre, who entered the den along with Black.
“We stayed with a friend in Kitchener,” said Black. “He travels just like a dog.”
The month has been busy at the Wolf Centre. On June 21 there will be an open house to celebrate the centre’s anniversary.
The centre will have free admission during the open house from noon until 4 p.m. Tim Hus, who is known as the cowboy singer, will be performing at the event at 2 p.m. There will also be a BBQ and artisans coming to display their works.
During the open house there will also be the Howl for Life, to raise money for local families affected by cancer.
“We’re putting the challenge out to the community,” said Black. “The winner gets to go on a photo session with the wolves.”
