The Times Review welcomes a new monthly column by students Kelsey Kindret and Miranda Urquhart called Success at RSS! that will explore events at Revelstoke Secondary. If you’d like to get in touch with Kelsey and Miranda, please email them at the address listed at the end of this column.
October has been a crazy month at RSS.
Throughout the month the school hosted the Last Spike volleyball Tournament. Schools from around the Okanagan descended on RSS to compete in the tournament. The Revelstoke Senior girls played six awesome games and brought home the gold! The grade 8, junior and senior volleyball teams are now practising hard to get the same results in up coming playoffs for valleys and Provincials.
Speaking of descending on RSS, British Columbian universities and colleges came to talk to senior students about furthering their education in B.C. Everyone found it interesting to hear about great scholarship opportunities and what the schools had to offer them.
Student leadership provided a spooky backdrop to this years Hallowe’en. Students came to school to find that main hall had been decorated with enough bats and spiders to please any Hallowe’en fan. The festivities included pumpkin bowling, a pumpkin carving contest, won by Monte Fraser, James Taylor and Issac Smith, as well as a very creative costume contest won by Wylie Harder and Catherine Perkins.
On the Nov. 10, the school will be holding their annual Remembrance Day ceremony. Staff and students come together to remember the soldiers who dedicate their lives to their country. The #2456 Rocky Mountain Royal Canadian Cadet Corps not only attend this assembly but participate as well. They also participate in the Remembrance Day Ceremony on Nov. 11. Four Cadets are chosen to be part of the honour guard and protect the monument during the ceremony. We would like to recognize all the cadets at RSS. They are MWO Jennifer Rienks, WO Justin Smith, Sgt. Logan McDougall, Mcpl. Rachel Rienks, Mcpl. Dustin Andrews, Mcpl. Corey Erb, Cpl. Gregory O’Hagan, Cpl. Tyler Coley, Cpl. Rowan Nevard, Pte. Jesse Fitzmaurice, Pte. Travis Coley, Cdt. Xena Tilden, Cdt. Isaac Newton.
Thanks to Jennifer Rienks for the information regarding the Remembrance Day Ceremony and Jackson Yauck for coming up with a name for this column.
