Woman in hospital after being rescued from vehicle following accident

A woman was rushed to hospital after being rescued from an SUV following an accident on the Trans Canada highway west of Revelstoke Friday morning.

The driver of the car said the crash happened after the car got caught up in the spray of a logging truck. Suddenly, he found himself heading into the ditch at the side of the road.

The driver was able to exit the vehicle relatively unscathed but his wife was trapped on the passenger side.

Rescue workers had to dig a hole in the side of the ditch in order to open the passenger door.

They then carefully removed the woman from the vehicle and placed her on a stretcher.

She was rushed to Queen Victoria Hospital, where she remained as of Friday evening with a lower body injury, police said.

The driver is charged with failing to pass safely.

Police said the SUV was borrowed from a family member. It was badly damaged following the crash.
