Revelstoke Seniors opt out of provincial organization

After some deliberation, the Revelstoke Senior Citizens’ Association has decided to withdraw from their now former provincial parent organization, the Council of Senior Citizens Organizations.
President of the Revelstoke Senior Citizens’ Association Ruth Boettger says a number of factors contributed to the decision.
Membership fees were one issue. Revelstoke Seniors had to forward $3 out of a $10 annual fee to the provincial organization for membership, and that fee was scheduled to go up to $5.
Aside from the increase, Boettger said members questioned what they were getting for their fees, and decided it was not worth continuing on.
She says another issue was general independence. Before withdrawing, they were required to get permission in order to change their bylaws. This step was also viewed as unnecessary and cumbersome.
Boettger says the change is largely on paper, and it will not affect much on a practical, day to day basis. “Branch 83” has been dropped from their name because it was their identification number under the provincial organization.
The Revelstoke Seniors will remain as members of the National Pensioners and Senior Citizens Federation. Boettger says the national organization does good work at a minimal fee.
Boettger encourages current and new members to get out to their upcoming meetings to help decide the direction of organizations.
Upcoming discussions include bylaw changes resulting from the withdrawal and smaller issues -- such as designing new membership cards.
A series of computer classes will also be starting soon.
