About 2,000 customers in the downtown portion of Revelstoke were without power for about three hours on Sept. 3 after high winds that accompanied a thunderstorm toppled trees onto power lines.
BC Hydro spokesperson Jennifer Walker-Larsen says the power outage affected about 2,000 customers and lasted from just before noon until about 3 p.m.
In Revelstoke, there are three main distribution lines that originate from the Illecillewaet Substation. Walker-Larsen said the storm took out the distribution line that serves the majority of downtown Revelstoke.
She says that power outages to downtown Revelstoke caused by downed lines may be more frequent and last for longer than in other areas because that part of the city has a denser network of lines that are adjacent to more trees. In addition, crews must inspect the entire network before power can be restored, which takes longer than with smaller and simpler networks that serve areas such as Arrow Heights.
The same storm had Parks Canada staff cleaning up after downed trees caused disruptions in many of their facilities.
Glacier National Park, the Illecillewaet Campground, Loop Brook Campground, Hemlock Grove Boardwalk, Mount Revelstoke National Park, Skunk Cabbage Boardwalk, Giant Cedars Boardwalk and the Meadows in the Sky Parkway all experienced temporary closures as staff removed debris and made repairs.
