REVELSTOKE – Details are emerging about a dramatic rescue that occurred on Griffin Lake at 3 Valley Gap just after noon today.
According to Revelstoke RCMP and other sources, a Dodge minivan travelling eastbound on the Trans-Canada Highway lost control, struck a post and then careened into Griffin Lake.
Four elderly Alberta residents were inside the vehicle, which came to rest completely submerged with the roof about a metre underwater.
Two 19-year-old males from the Kelowna area were following behind the minivan and witnessed the accident.
They immediately stopped and jumped into the freezing lake to come to the aid of those inside. RCMP say they were able to remove three of the passengers and bring them back safely to shore. They then learned from the rescued passengers that there was one other person still trapped inside the minivan. The men then jumped back into the lake and pulled the fourth and final occupant of the car to safety.
Revelstoke Fire Rescue Services attended the scene and took the injured passengers to Queen Victoria Hospital in Revelstoke.
In a press release, the RCMP say the quick actions of the young men averted a tragedy. "Revelstoke RCMP would like to extend their appreciation to these young men, for their selfless actions."
