Pets locked in cars in summer heat

Revelstoke Animal Control Officer Cindy Levens is reminding pet owners that it is a criminal offence to leave pets inside vehicles in the summer heat.
She contacted the Times Review following three recent incidents of dogs being left in locked cars. Temperatures inside the vehicles can spike very quickly, causing distress for animals, and possibly death. “Older animals can just expire, just die in no time,” she says.
“If the animal is locked in the car, and it’s in distress, obviously in this heat, we can have someone either break the window or get into the car,” warns Levens.
The incidents are typically reported by passersby, and owners are often confronted by a group of upset people when they return to their vehicle.
