Revelstoke Relay For Life organizers are calling the annual Canadian Cancer Society fundraiser a success after volunteers and a total of 19 teams raised just over $69,000 this year.

Organizer Stella Brassard says that some remaining post-event fundraisers are sure to push the total over the $70,000 target for 2009. “It was a fantastic day. The weather held out for us and the teams did just a fantastic job. Everyone pulled together,” she said.

Team Gloria was the top fundraising team, bringing in over $15,000. They received a prize of a Waterway houseboat trip, but the team decided to pass along the prize to the Girl Power team which consisted of elementary school students.

The Pharmasave Health Bugs came in second in total funds raised with a total of just over $6,200 and will head out on a rafting trip provided by Apex Raft Co.

The Rob Squad, who had a military theme to their tent and costumes and even carried young ones around the track on a stretcher, won the spirit award which will see them off to Skytrek Adventure Park to further hone their obstacle course skills.

The top individual fundraiser was Wayne Murray of Team Gloria who raised nearly $1,650.

Other draw prize winners were Valerie Beard of Team Taking Strides who won a massage at Powder Springs and Annick Langlois who won a day pass to Revelstoke Mountain Resort.

The event sold 375 luminaries were sold at the event.

A total of over 65 survivors participated in the event, joining a total of over 50 volunteers.
